Meet the district that outpaced pandemic learning loss by 5+ percentile points in just 8 weeks

The rural School District of Newberry County, South Carolina, serves approximately 3,000 students in kindergarten through grade 5 among eight elementary schools. In 2020, like many other districts across the U.S., they were looking for ways to support their students and teachers and specifically accelerate math learning. Newberry’s first month of usage saw 83% of all students across the district logged in and completing 3 lessons per week. The following month, usage increased to 89%, with students completing 6+ lessons per week, which is aligned to DreamBox’s usage recommendations.

Although the COVID pandemic threw education as we know it into disarray, Shelby County Public Schools, already a nontraditional instruction (NTI) district, saw math scores increase. The NTI district, positioned so students continue learning even on days schools are closed, had a leg up on many other school districts around the country. Three years ago, educators in Mesa County Valley School District 51 (D51) in Grand Junction, Colorado began implementing a performance-based learning (PBL) model district-wide. Rather than ask students to learn at a uniform pace, the D51 model allows individual students to progress from one curriculum concept to the next as soon as they demonstrate proficiency. Because DreamBox Learning® Math aligned so closely to D51’s new instructional model and standards, math content facilitator Megan Bennet recommended piloting the program on a limited basis in Mesa County Valley elementary schools.
